This activity introduces participants to the wonders of soil—what it is, why it matters, and what it's made of. Through interactive exploration, participants will learn about soil textures and composition. A hands-on Mason Jar Soil Test will allow them to analyze different soil layers firsthand.

Things you’ll need...
Step one
Collect your soil sample from your backyard, park, or garden.
Step two
Fill a clear mason jar about halfway with your soil. Then fill the rest of the jar with water, leaving a little space at the top.
Step three
Tightly close the lid and shake the jar hard for about 1–2 minutes to mix the soil and water completely
Step four
Observe how the soil has separated into layers. The heavier sand will settle at the bottom, followed by silt, with clay on top. Discuss or record what you see!
